When Johnny Joe McCollum and Jamie Sweeney met for a chat outside the old Downtown Bar, little did they know that something unique was about to happen which is now known as the Letterkenny Reunion.
During their conversation, many topics were discussed but they finished up with the idea of attracting old townies back to their roots and how this could be achieved. Many of the names that sprung to mind were of people who emmigrated many years ago for one reason or another and if a plan was put in place this would be an oppurtunity for them to return home and witness the changes that occured since they left. They added one more name to the organising committee, that of Johnny Gallagher R.I.P. and the first reunion was set for August 1991 to encourage emigrants from Letterkenny to come home to meet and reunite with former friends and family over a few days in August.
This unique festival provides an extended family atmosphere with nostalgic memories, excitement abd joy as old friends are recognised and acquaintances renewed. The atmosphere is electric as family members meet at home from many parts of the world.Their memories are renewed and friendships are carried with them abroad as they look forward from one reunion to the next. The reunion committee keep this alive via local media and websites.
